Mark David’s and Mike Fegelman’s claim about Israel being a “modern liberal democracy” has its dissenters (“False comparison,” and “Mandela backed Israel,” respectively, Dec. 12) — for example, Israeli historian Ilan Pappe, author of The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, and the late noted historian Tony Judt who commented on Israel’s democratic deficit, too.
Then there is the Israeli Supreme Court ruling of 1989 that affirmed Israel is the sovereign state of the Jewish people and not the state of its citizens. A more recent Israeli Supreme Court ruling reaffirmed that fact by denying there is any Israeli ethnicity in Israel:www.timesofisrael.com/supreme-court-rules-israeli-ethnicity-doesnt-exist.
Thus, one of the fundamental tenets of the Jewish state’s existence is for the preservation of a Jewish majority controlling the state, the granting of preference to Jews in matters of immigration, and the existence of close and reciprocal relations between the state and the Jews of the diaspora.
A political party in Israel could not run candidates on its platform advocating the cancellation of this fundamental tenet.
That this would be illegal in Israel hardly conforms to the image of a modern democracy, which is the state of all of its citizens.

Re: Charles W. Sampson’s Jan. 3 letter, “Jewish state at its core.”
Of course Israel is a democracy — insanely so when compared to any Islamic state. Israel affords voice to the most rabid anti-Semite while censoring or jailing patriotic law-abiding Jews.
Quoting revisionist “historians” — a socialist and a Marxist — who understand “disinformation” is destructive.
Read newspapers from December 1947 to May 1948. No Arabs were “ethnically cleansed.” The British recorded the Arab-initiated evacuation and foolish Jews begging them to stay.
Jordanian Legion’s Glubb Pasha told the Daily Telegraph: “Arab villagers fled ignominiously long before their areas were visited by the progress of the war.” The Arab Higher Committee stated “the refugees were the Arabs’ official tactics to protest UNR 181.”
Fabrications say Jews “ethnically cleansed” the region, but 140,000 Arabs became Israelis. “The Forgotten Refugees” were expelled from the Arab World.
Of course Israel’s existence depends on keeping a Jewish majority. Would England wish to be majority English?
