Today is the anniversary of Sabra and Shatila. The massacre took place less than a month after I arrived in Jerusalem in 1982, as a student of AMBS (Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary) for four months. This massacre and the explanations of the massacre that followed, was what began the process of politicization in my learnings about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and how I came to see what the real issues were--military occupation/oppression/oppressor/oppressed/resistance
and dispossession and much more.
